The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced its nominations list for 2021 and the category of Best Actress may well be one of the strongest of the entire awards show.
There will be some serious competition for the award this year as Viola Davis, Andra Day, Vanessa Kirby, Frances McDormand and Carey Mulligan face-off for a chance at the coveted golden statue.
For decades, the chance to grab a golden statue from the Academy has been a dream of most actors and actresses. The glinting promise of a career solidified by the award is often too tempting to ignore. And, for one of the women listed below, that dream will become a reality on April 25th.
Viola Davis will be keen to capitalise on the critical acclaim for her starring role in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and add a second statue to her collection. Frances McDormand is also looking to add to her collection of gongs for her role in Nomadland. At the same time, Carey Mulligan’s heroic performance in Promising Young Woman is also a serious contender to gain the actress’ first prize, something Vanessa Kirby is also on the hunt for after her starring performance in Pieces of a Woman. But perhaps the likely favourite for the award is Andra Day.
Day became the first Black woman in 35 years to pick up the Golden Globe for Best Actress after her starring role as the titular musician in The United States vs. Billie Holiday gained her the prize. With the Globes often being received as a pre-cursor to the Oscars, the chances of Day grabbing the award feel larger than ever.
The 93rd Academy Awards will take place on April 25th and see one of the names below pick up their prize and achieve their dream.
