Oscars 2019: Ellen DeGeneres says the Academy still wants Kevin Hart to host and urges him to reconsider
The Academy still want Kevin Hart to be the host of the forthcoming the 91st Academy Awards, according to Ellen DeGeneres.
DeGeneres, who emerged as the favourite to replace Hart following his decision to step down, also urged the comedian to reverse his decision and MC the show after all.
Hart was forced to walk away after a series of homophobic tweets and a string of anti-gay jokes made during his stand-up routines nearly 10 years ago emerged. Hart attempted to delete all the aforementioned tweets during the day and initially refused to step down from his position as MC, posting a video on Instagram, saying: “My team calls me, ‘Oh my God, Kevin, everyone’s upset by tweets you did years ago,’” he said in that video.
Despite his defiance, hours later a tweet followed from Hart in which he has now decided to step down from the role: “I have made the choice to step down from hosting this year’s Oscars,” he wrote.
Now, sitting down with DeGeneres as part of her talk show, she urged Hart to reconsider walking away from the Oscars. DeGeneres also claimed that she contacted the Academy who allegedly told her that they would reconsider reinstating Hart as host. “We want him to host, whatever we can do, we would be thrilled, and he should host,” she said.
Turning her attention to the Twitter users who unearth Hart’s Tweets, she described them as ‘trolls’ before added: “Don’t pay attention to them; they are a small group of people who are very, very loud,” DeGeneres said to Hart. “We are a huge group of people who love you and want you to host the Oscars.”
Replying to her, Hart said: “It’s tough for me because it was an attack, a malicious attack on my character, to end me.”
Stepping up her defence, Degeneres said that Hart will be letting the “haters” win if he walks away. “They will win if you don’t host the Oscars.” She said before adding” “You can’t let them destroy you because you have too much talent, and for them to stop you from your dream, from what you want to do, what you have the right to do, what you should be doing.
“Don’t let those people win, host the Oscars… That’s why they (The Academy) haven’t found another host, because they are secretly hoping that you would come back.”
