Orgy Dome at Burning Man destroyed by dust storm
Burning Man festival has been impacted heavily by extreme weather, which has destroyed its Orgy Dome.
The festival, which typically attracts over 70,000 people each year, began on August 24th and is set to continue until September 1st. However, this year’s event has been severely affected by 50-mile-per-hour dust storms in Nevada.
According to the San Francisco Chronicle, four people have been injured due to the weather, which has also damaged campsites, and art installations at the festival, as well as the notorious Orgy Dome attraction.
In a statement on August 25th, organisers said following the destruction of the Orgy Dome: “Our build team worked so hard this past week to erect our lovely space. Unfortunately, the winds yesterday undid all that labor and wrecked our structure.”
They continued, “We are still here and thankfully safe. We hope to gift the playa some workshops and will keep you updated.”
Then, on August 26th, organisers issued another statement informing attendees about the expected extreme weather: “Thunderstorm approaching the event site from the north. Light precipitation is currently falling in BRC. Possible strong winds in the next 20 minutes. Take care of your camps, and let your neighbors know.”
The Orgy Dome has been part of Burning Man since 2003. It is run by a sex positive collective and is a highly popular destination for festival-goers, with 5,000 reportedly visiting the space at last year’s event. Organisers say it offers “education about consent and the importance of its practice beyond intimate space”.
On August 26th, organisers were also forced to close a gate at the festival due to the thunderstorms in Nevada.
Although the weather did make many people leave the festival, the Reno Gazzette Journal states that 40,000 remained at Burning Man on August 25th despite the dust storm.
