The only time Sydney Sweeney was left starstruck: “I freaked out”
If you want to have a conversation about meteoric rises to superstardom, then there has to be room for Sydney Sweeney. Best known as a TV star, she laid the groundwork with the likes of Sharp Objects and The Handmaid’s Tale, before grabbing the world’s attention with her role as Cassie Howard in the megahit teen drama Euphoria. Since then, she’s made a splash in the movie world too, appearing in the likes of Anyone but You and Immaculate, a horror film she also produced.
Sweeney has come a long way since she featured as one of the many future A-listers in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. It hasn’t always run smoothly – *cough* Madame Web *cough* – but she’s always managed to come out of her projects looking strong. With her much-touted turn as boxer Christy Martin on the horizon, the future looks very bright for this young idol.
In her brief, yet packed time at the top of the mountain, Sweeney has brushed elbows with some of the great and the good of Hollywood. In the aforementioned Tarantino flick, she acted opposite both Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt. The survival thriller Eden put her together with Jude Law, Ana de Armas, and Vanessa Kirby, while Euphoria has a stacked cast list of equally talented young actors.
You’d think with all this going on that Sweeney would be comfortable in any situation with anyone. Apparently, that’s not the case. According to a conversation with W magazine, the one class of celebrity that she cannot cope with being around is reality TV stars, particularly those on the HGTV network. “Those are the only reality shows that I watch,” she revealed. “When I saw the Property Brothers, I freaked out.”
HGTV, which stands for ‘Home & Garden Television’, is a cable channel that comes under the Warner Bros Discovery umbrella. As you may have been able to figure out, it focuses mainly on home and garden renovation shows, and the Property Brothers are among its biggest stars. Drew and Jonathan Scott are a pair of identical twins who host a number of house-related programmes. Their original venture, simply titled ‘Property Brothers’, revolves around estate agent Drew finding houses for prospective buyers, who then go through contractor Jonathan to fix them up and flip them. That show was such a success that the brothers now have a fleet of related series, as well as an app, a book, and their own radio show.
It might seem a little ridiculous, but the Scott brothers are extremely well-connected within Hollywood circles. Their show Celebrity IOU features a number of high-profile guests, ranging from Rebel Wilson to Melissa McCarthy to Sweeney’s old co-star Brad Pitt. To celebrate their 400th renovation, stars of the calibre of Rainn Wilson and Michael Bublé appeared to congratulate them. Then there’s the case of Jonathan’s fiancée – New Girl star Zooey Deschanel. The couple got together in 2019, shortly before Deschanel finalised a divorce from her husband, Jacob Pechenik.
This is far from the first instance of a major movie star finding comfort in ‘trashy’ reality TV. Emma Stone admitted that she is a huge fan of the X-rated dating show Naked Attraction. Clearly, when you’re living the high life, it helps to reconnect with normality from time to time.
