The one thing Harrison Ford hates being asked: “I don’t want to fucking make shit up like that”

One of Hollywood’s most amusing ironies is that Harrison Ford is a geek icon thanks to Han Solo and Indiana Jones, yet the man himself has very little time for geeky stuff.

Throughout the years, several generations of fans have excitedly watched him bring his brand of laconic charisma to two of the greatest genre characters ever created. They’ve also marvelled at the Blade Runner movies and can’t wait for him to finally appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the upcoming Captain America: Brave New World. Basically, Ford is a God at Comic-Con, but he’s made it perfectly obvious that he can’t abide geek minutiae. Oh, and for the love of God, don’t ask him the one thing he hates hearing the most.

Ford’s history of exhibiting a complete lack of understanding about why so many people love the geeky properties he’s starred in is long and hilarious. For starters, he’s always been open and honest with his opinion that Han Solo, as depicted in the Star Wars scripts, wasn’t much to write home about. He once told Starpulse, “I did think the character itself was relatively thin. I would have liked to see some complication for the character.” He also told Entertainment Weekly, “He’s got a good heart, but I think he’s certainly a much less interesting character than Indiana Jones. He’s dumb as a stump. The breadth of his story utility was never extensive.”

In recent years, Ford has fielded almost every question about Han Solo, Indy, or Marvel with a withering look and dismissive quip. For instance, when he was asked on Reddit if Han or Greedo shot first, he responded, “I don’t care.” When USA Today wanted to know if Han Solo was actually a Force Ghost in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, he deadpanned, “I don’t know what a Force Ghost is. Don’t tell anyone.”

Then, at San Diego Comic-Con 2024, he was asked who would handle snakes better: Indiana Jones or his Captain America character, General ‘Thunderbolt’ Ross. He replied with customary bemusement, “I’ve always treated these questions with the utmost respect and complete disdain. I will not answer that stupid question. But thank you for the opportunity.”

Ford’s apparent disinterest in the things his fans obsess about led some to theorise in 2023 that he has always suffered from undiagnosed social anxiety. However, Ford shot that idea down quickly, telling The Hollywood Reporter, “That sounds like something a psychiatrist would say, not a casual observer. No. I don’t have a social anxiety disorder. I have an abhorrence of boring situations.” That’s right, he’s not socially awkward – he just thinks fans are boring losers.

In all seriousness, though, Ford doesn’t actually hate fans of the nerdy movies he became so famous for. After all, he’s returned to every one of his iconic franchises numerous times and once declared, “Han Solo was very good to me at a certain point in my career.” It’s likely he simply doesn’t care as much about the ins and outs of each fictional universe he’s starred in because, to him, it’s work, not a passion. This then manifests as grumpiness when he’s asked about these things by excited devotees.

So, if you ever encounter Ford, tell him you’re a big fan, but don’t ask him an obscure question that only hardcore fans could care about. Also, if you value the image you have of him in your head, don’t ask who he thinks would win in a fight between Indiana Jones and Han Solo. Seriously. He will curse you out.

In 2023, Ford admitted that he gets asked that particular ditty all the time by fans, and it drives him nuts. The irritable superstar revealed to Esquire that when he hears this question, he angrily replies, “Me, asshole!” He then shook his head in dismay and added, “I don’t want to fucking make shit up like that. I mean, what are you asking me that crap for?”
