The one type of actor Jennifer Lawrence never wants to work with: “I would be nervous”
Some actors, like Jennifer Lawrence, have always had it in their bones, showing signs of one day being a performer in early childhood.
Lawrence’s family weren’t exactly the most creative types, nor did they have the kind of dynamic you might think would nurture a big, Hollywood-calibre actor. But Lawrence always had the interest and the confidence, and was one day lucky enough to be discovered by a random talent scout in New York City’s Union Square.
Lawrence hadn’t really known what was going on at the time, nor did she have any clue that she’d end up one of the biggest names in the business. But she did know that she would give it everything she had, even if the only thing to come out of it was a fun opportunity and something to talk about when she got home.
Things got serious pretty quickly, though, and suddenly Lawrence was no longer just doing commercials but small projects, a turning point that led to her relocation to Los Angeles with her mother to give it all a good go. She did say that if she didn’t make it by the time she was 18, she’d probably move back home again. But as history tells us, she never had to make that decision.
Lawrence’s rise to fame has been anything but linear. In fact, for a while there, she was one of the more controversial figures, someone whose personality was no longer cute, relatable, and charming, but someone who seemingly played up to the cameras just to sustain relevance. This wasn’t the case, of course, but it didn’t stop internet trolls from pushing that as a narrative.
Once she had endured the swarm of internet and media scrutiny, however, Lawrence bounced back, stronger than ever. What’s more, people are starting to look at how others supercharged her downfall and reflect on what went wrong, realising that none of it was Lawrence’s fault, even though it was made out to feel like the opposite at the time.
But as we’ve seen, respect for Lawrence has returned, and in interviews, we get let in on some of the more delicate details of the actor’s mind, like her favourite movies, her experiences on the sets of some of her biggest titles, and what makes her tick when it comes to creativity. We also get to learn more about the types of dynamics she prefers on set, as well as the types of actors she struggles with.
For instance, during her episode of Hot Ones in 2023, Lawrence shed some light on why she finds it difficult to work alongside method actors, saying that it would make her uncomfortable because she wouldn’t know how to act around them, and most people probably understand her position, as method actors are already pretty goddamn divisive in broader acting discussions.
“I would be nervous to work with someone who’s Method,” said Lawrence. “Because I would have no idea how to talk to them, because like, do I have to be in character? That would just make me nervous. But I don’t know, I haven’t seen another process that I’ve been curious about because you don’t know about them all the time.”
