‘One Battle After Another’ to compete as a comedy at the Golden Globes
Paul Thomas Anderson‘s 2025 action hit One Battle After Another will be submitted to the Golden Globes as a comedy.
The movie stars Leonardo DiCaprio as Bob, a former revolutionary who was part of the far-left group French 75, who abuses drink and drugs while living off the grid before being thrust back into action to save his daughter, Willa (played by Chase Infiniti). It is loosely based on the original novel Vineland by Thomas Pynchon.
As confirmed by Variety, it has been submitted to the Golden Globe Awards as a comedy. DiCaprio and Infiniti will compete in the lead acting categories across all groups during awards season. The rest of the cast will also seek consideration in supporting roles.
The direct competitors in the same category are expected to be A24’s Marty Supreme, Focus Features’ Bugonia, Universal Pictures’ Wicked: For Good, and others.
The film is also a major Oscar contender. It has the potential to score up to 14 nominations, which would tie it with previous record-setters Titanic and La La Land. A new category introduced this year in casting could lend the film the final step it needs to break that record.
In a four-and-a-half-star review of One Battle After Another, Far Out wrote: “Revitalising old stars and launching new ones, it does it all there too, as every single element of this movie, every person and every detail, feels masterful. It’s a Hollywood romp that has been through the rigours of arthouse attention to detail and intention to stir.”
Nonetheless, it hasn’t been a hit for everyone. American Psycho author Bret Easton Ellis had criticised One Battle After Another, claiming it will be viewed as a “musty relic of the post-Kamala Harris era, that thing everyone gathers around and pretends is so fantastic and so great when it really isn’t, just to make a point”. The nail-biting film landed in cinemas on September 26th.
