‘Obsession’ director Curry Barker lands eight-figure deal at Universal
Horror lovers will rejoice at the news that Obsession mastermind Curry Barker has signed another original movie, this time landing an eight-figure deal with Blumhouse Atomic Monster and Universal.
The YouTuber wowed audiences earlier this year with the release of Obsession, a horror film that follows the consequences of a young man who makes a wish that his colleague loves him more than anyone in the world.
The 26-year-old director quickly became the envy of the film world after pulling in $290million on a budget of $750,000.
The new deal came about as Barker pitched his concept to Universal’s executives, according to The Hollywood Reporter, and a “rich eight-figure deal” was promptly made.
Though not much else is known about the project, it marks Barker’s third big-screen extravaganza at Universal and Blumhouse Atomic Monster.
Before Obsession even hit theatres globally, Barker had already filmed his sophomore studio feature, Anything But Ghosts, which stars Aaron Paul, Cooper Tomlinson, Bryce Dallas Howard, Violet McGraw, Chris Reinacher, and Barker himself.
Anything But Ghosts continues the trend of Barker’s original, insightful concepts, as it follows two fake paranormal investigators who come face-to-face with ghosts on the job in spite of their fraudulent business.
Barker is equally excited for the new movie, sharing in an official statement, “This film is something I’ve been excited to make for a while, and I’m thrilled to be reteaming with Blumhouse Atomic Monster and Universal Film Group for it.”
He added, “They’ve built the kind of home for bold, original storytelling that every filmmaker dreams of, and I couldn’t imagine better collaborators for this film.”
If this weren’t enough for the nascent creative, Barker has also already tapped a Texas Chainsaw Massacre reboot for A24. The young filmmaker has previously teased that it will be “brutal” and “has some heart to it.”
Far Out gave Obsession a glowing four-and-a-half-star review, observing, “Obsession is also compulsively entertaining, with scenes or prolonged suspense that rank as minor masterpieces in their own right, and while not every much-hyped festival horror film can live up to expectations, this one is a burst of originality that feels sorely desired.”
