Nicolas Cage set to reunite with John Woo almost three decades since ‘Face/Off’
Nicolas Cage is set to reunite with director John Woo almost 30 years after their cult action movie, Face/Off.
Cage will star in Gambino, which is written by Bad Boys mastermind George Gallo and Oscar-winning writer and producer Nick Vallelonga.
According to Variety, the movie will focus on Cage’s Carlo Gambino, a butcher’s son from Sicily, who ruled New York’s underworld.
However, as his death sends shockwaves through the city, Pulitzer-winning journalist Jimmy Breslin follows the trail he left behind to uncover the man beneath the myth and the legend.
The official synopsis shares: “Through the voices of those who loved him and those who feared him, Breslin peels back the composure that masked Gambino’s ruthlessness, revealing how this outsider rose to redefine power, loyalty, and the American dream.”
A reunion between Woo and Cage has been anticipated since 1999. Paramount revealed in 1999 that it had plans to remake the movie with a new cast. However, in 2021, it was reported that Adam Wingard would direct a film that would act as a sequel to the first.
The original follows FBI agent Sean Archer, played by John Travolta, who undergoes facial transplant surgery to swap faces with his nemesis and infamous terrorist Castor Troy, played by Nicolas Cage.
In 2023, Cage admitted he used to be very close with the director, reminiscing, “I haven’t spoken to [Woo] in a very long time, but at one time we were pretty close.”
Woo has publicly praised Cage many times. He has previously showered praise upon his directorial style, sharing, “the way he directed the actors was brilliant,” with director Cage immediately letting the viewer know “who this guy is and what kind of style this movie is”.
NextG film will finance the movie. “At NextG Film, our vision is to unite the finest creative talents of Hollywood with the bold entrepreneurial spirit of Silicon Valley,” said Edward Zeng of NextG Film.
