Nicolas Cage claims Christopher Nolan refuses to work with him due to 2002 rejection

Nicolas Cage has claimed that Christopher Nolan has consistently shunned working with him because he rejected the director in 2002.

Cage made the comment in passing while speaking about Madden, a biopic about NFL coach and commentator John Madden, directed by David O Russell.

The Longlegs star noted how he’d previously turned down the opportunity to work with Russell in the past, but much to his surprise, this didn’t permanently end the chances of one day collaborating, as is often the case in Hollywood.

Cage told the New York Times: “David O Russell offered me a movie a million years ago. It was a good movie, and he offered it and I said no, and he’s the only director that I ever said no to who actually came back and offered me another movie.”

Cage elaborated, “Most of them, they get their feelings hurt and don’t call you back. It’s happened a million times to me. It’s happened with Christopher Nolan.”

He also revealed that Nolan is not the only director to have given him the silent treatment due to rejecting a role, sharing, “It’s happened with Woody Allen, it’s happened with Paul Thomas Anderson. They don’t call me back.”

The film in question that Cage rejected from Nolan was Insomnia, but he did not specify the role which he was offered in the movie.

Nolan does have a history of working with the same actors, such as Michael Caine, Cillian Murphy and Matt Damon, on multiple movies. Possibly, Cage could have also been part of that exclusive club if he hadn’t rejected Insomnia.

The British director’s upcoming movie, The Odyssey, is this summer’s most anticipated cinematic release. While it won’t star Cage, it does feature Damon, Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Charlize Theron, Zendaya, Travis Scott, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Himesh Patel, Mia Goth, John Berthnal, and many more.

It’s set for release on July 17th, 2026.
