NewJeans file new legal challenge over court order amid hiatus
The K-pop group NewJeans have filed a legal objection to contest an injunction granted to ADOR that prevents the group from pursuing independent activities.
This follows a recent announcement from the group stating they will be taking a hiatus amid an ongoing court battle with their label over their name after a judge ruled they could not continue performing despite changing their name to NJZ.
The band submitted the legal objection to the Seoul Central District Court on March 21st. The same day, the court ruled in favour of their label and granted the company an injunction against the girl group.
In the ruling, it was stated that the group was ordered to stop performing, producing music, or creating advertising deals due to their ongoing legal dispute with their label, Ador, and prevent the band from pursuing independent work.
Responding to the ruling, the band and their team have stated they “did not have sufficient opportunity to fully present the factual background to the court” due to “the urgent nature of injunction proceedings”. They continued to explain that just one hearing was held for the injunction earlier this month before the ruling was made.
The band’s statement added, “Above all, until the point the exclusive contracts were terminated, we had diligently fulfilled out obligations without any wrongdoing.”
They also noted: “In contrast, ADOR and HYBE, behind the scenes, continued to treat us unfairly and unequally, ultimately destroying the relationship of trust. It is only a matter of time before the truth becomes clear.”
On March 23rd, NewJeans headlined ComplexCon Hong Kong. During the show, the group premiered a new song and announced a hiatus in accordance with the court ruling.
