New Order and Iggy Pop are a recipe for magic and, these two forces of greatness collide, it should come as little surprise that their version of ‘Love Will Tear Us Apart’ is spellbinding.
There is longlasting respect between these two wonderous figures in music which even led to Iggy appearing on New Order’s 2015 record Music Complete. On the album, the former Stooges man delivers an insanely evocative spoken word that fits in perfectly with the electronic world of New Order. Bernard Sumner knew straight away from the moment he wrote it that there was only one man in the world that could perform the poem that he’d written and Iggy was elated to accept.
“I wrote it, then immediately after thought, ‘Iggy would be good for this,'” Sumner told Vice before explaining. “Because I wrote the poem down, and I had the track in mind for to work against, so I wrote it, and I think that night or the next night I put the guide vocal down in the mode of Iggy Pop. Like an Iggy Pop impersonation, and then I sent it off to Iggy.”
Iggy once named Joy Division as one of the five bands that everyone should listen to so getting the opportunity to perform with New Order was a dream come true all round. “These songs are so great. I heard this stuff when I was living in Berlin in the 70s and I was just mighty, mighty impressed,” he said in 2014.
“This is fine art and that’s about all I can say about it. On top of all of its other virtues, these are moral songs and those are very difficult to write,” he praised.
Around the same time of their magnificent collaboration, they also took to the stage in New York at the Carnegie Hall in March 2014 for the annual Tibet House US benefit show and with Iggy also on the bill, it was only right they joined forces.
Iggy Pop joined the Manchester natives for three tracks that started with ‘Californian Grass’—taken from their 2013 Lost Sirens LP—before they took a trip back to the Joy Division era for an electric rendition of ‘Transmission’ before finishing up on a thumping version of ‘Love Will Tear Us Apart’.
There is a special chemistry between these two acts who, over the years, have both lived about a thousand lives between them. Collectively, Iggy adds his own personality to ‘Love Will Tear Us Apart’ and manages to inject a dousing of euphoria into an all-time classic. Both artists look like they are in their element as well as the two contrasting vocals of Bernard Sumner and Iggy Pop which blend together to create this beautiful cosmic experience.
