Titled What’s Going On, a new biopic of Marvin Gaye in the works produced by Warner Bros, with Dr. Dre and Jimmy Lovine set to produce.
Having been in the works for a number of years, the project is finally gaining some traction, with news of Dr.Dre’s and Jimmy Lovine’s involvement dropping in 2018. The two music producers join the Hollywood mind of Andrew Lazar, with director Allen Hughes, previously responsible for Menace II Society and The Book of Eli, set to helm the project.
An icon of Motown thanks to his classic hits ‘What’s Going On’, ‘Sexual Healing’ and ‘Let’s Get It On’, the biopic about Gaye’s life comes well overdue, with his fascinating life ending tragically in 1984 when he was shot by his father at the age of just 44. Since his death in the 1980s, many have tried to get authorisation from Gaye’s family to get the film off the ground, including F. Gary Gray, Cameron Crowe, James Gandolfini, and Lenny Kravitz.
It’s only now, after this significant news from Warner Bros, that the wheels of the project have finally been set in motion. With a script being penned by the poet and playwright Marcus Gardley, and with the rights acquired to use all of Gaye’s signature songs, this could well be a fine ode to the life of the legendary singer.
According to reports, it looks as though What’s Going On will follow a winding story that works to merge Marvin Gaye’s past with the events of his final tour. Chronicling his relationship with his father, and exploring the inspiration behind some of the singers greatest love songs, the film promises to be a “musical odyssey” and “theatrical experience”.
We’ll have to wait a little longer for its release, however, with production due to start next year for a 2023 release date.
