New Frida Kahlo family home opens as new museum
A new light will soon be shed on visionary artist and cultural icon Frida Kahlo, as her family home is now open to the public as the new museum, ‘Casa Kahlo Museum’.
The house originally belonged to Frida Kahlo’s parents, who bought it after giving her the Casa Azul, where she lived with Diego Rivera, as a wedding gift. It is located in the Carmen neighbourhood of Coyoacán in Mexico City.
Museum director Adán García has shared of the new addition to her legacy, “You can find a more humane approach to her story, to her origins.” Throughout the museum, various personal artefacts that have not been available to the public can be found. There is also a darkroom displayed in her father’s honor.
In the cellar of the house, a drafting table holds her paintbrushes and glass exhibits of her curios. The room also displays dozens of photographs and letters written by Frida, many never before shown from the family archive. Some of the letters from Frida are even marked with kisses of Mexican pink lipstick.
Visitors can also see Kahlo”s dresses with intricate embroidery and pieces of pre-Hispanic jewelry, famously worn by Frida in many recognisable photographs. The kitchen also includes preserved murals done by Frida. The basement includes items such as paintings and Asian dolls purchased by Frida on a trip to San Francisco.
A Kahlo exhibition is also coming to the Houston Museum of Fine Arts and the Tate Modern in London. The upcoming Tate exhibition, titled ‘Frida: The Making of an Icon’ promises to “showcase works by the artist that introduce her ‘many selves’ – the dedicated wife, the intellectual, the modern artist, and the political activist. Featuring over 130 works, including some of her most well-known paintings.”
It will open from June 25th 2026, to January 3rd 2027.
