Nell Mescal announces new EP, ‘The Closest We’ll Get’

Indie-pop singer-songwriter Nell Mescal has announced a new EP, The Closest We’ll Get, which will arrive on October 24th via Atlantic Records.

Mescal revealed that the project is firmly focused on dissecting a specific relationship. “The Closest We’ll Get is a collection of songs that tell a story about two people and how their relationship is in the grey area of friends or lovers,” the singer said. “Each song is a realisation of how sitting in the in-between affected me and in turn affected the ‘friendship.’”

She has also shared the titular track, a soft and reflective folk-inspired offering, which opens with the lyrics, “I could love you, won’t you let me?”

The EP is produced by Philip Weinrobe, who has also worked with Adrianne Lenker, Billie Marten and Cass McCombs. According to the press release, the EP will showcase “an organic new sound developed during recording sessions out in Brooklyn, NY.” It will draw on Nell’s folk influences and Weinrobe’s unconventional production style.

Mescal’s last track, ‘Carried Away’, was released at the end of July and contains whimsical folk leanings.

Alongside the EP announcement, Mescal announced a host of shows to celebrate the release. The ‘In My Head’ singer will make 12 stops across the UK and Ireland, including Dublin’s Button Factory and London’s Islington Assembly Hall. Tickets will go on sale at the end of August.

Far Out previously deemed Mescal’s 2024 EP one of the best of the year, writing that Mescal has “an incredible voice with a stunning range that becomes velvety and rich in its lower register, especially. But there is something about the specificity of Can I Miss It For A Minute? that’s intoxicating.”

Mescal will perform at Reading and Leeds festivals across the bank holiday weekend. She will join the likes of Bring Me The Horizon, Hozier, Chappell Roan, The Kooks, Enter Shikari and Wallows at the iconic festivals.
