Neil Young decided to treat his fans to a rare live rendition of ‘On The Beach’ while performing in Antwerp, Belgium.
While in concert with Promise of the Real at the Sportpaleis venue, Young decided to roll out the track for the first time in 16 years, the last time being a solo show dating back to 2003. On top of that, Jambase are reporting that it is the first time he has played the song with a full band since 1974, the year the album released.
The song is the title track from Young’s fifth studio album of the same name, an album which Rolling Stone once described as “one of the most despairing albums of the decade,” it its original review.
The creation of the record is shrouded in folk history rumours and, according to some, during the entire process of recording of the album Young and his fellow musicians consumed a homemade concoction dubbed ‘Honey Slides’. The ‘goop’, as it was described, consisted of sauteed marijuana and honey that “felt like heroin.”
