Natalie Portman describes relationship with Moby as an “older man being creepy”
Famed musician Moby; known for various escapades in his heyday including a special feud with rap star Eminem and his unnerving Lothario persona with women, has detailed some of his antics for his new memoir Then It All Fell Apart.
Bringing to light stories of some past relationships with rising stars at the time, Moby most notably names Lana Del Ray and Natalie Portman as his past relationships. But while people gawp at the idea of the weedy Moby doing his best Fabio impression, it seems that these tales are being claimed to be just that, tales.
Portman has recently publicly detailed her past relationship with Moby, telling a slightly different version of events compared with the producer’s recent memoir. Moby describes meeting Portman in 1999 at a concert backstage in Austin. He also describes how they attended the VMA Music Awards together as a couple. Later, he discusses how he travelled to Cambridge, MA, where he writes: “At midnight she brought me to her dorm room and we lay down next to each other on her small bed… After she fell asleep I carefully extracted myself from her arms and took a taxi back to my hotel.”
Portman, who was a Junior at the time, said: “I was a fan and went to one of his shows when I had just graduated,” in an interview with Harper’s Bazaar. “When we met after the show, he said, ‘let’s be friends.’ He was on tour and I was working, shooting a film, so we only hung out a handful of times before I realized that this was an older man who was interested in me in a way that felt inappropriate.”
Portman continued: “I was surprised to hear that he characterised the very short time that I knew him as dating because my recollection is a much older man being creepy with me when I just had graduated high school.”
Furthermore, when discussing her age at the time, Portman continued: “He said I was 20; I definitely wasn’t. I was a teenager. I had just turned 18. There was no fact checking from him or his publisher – it almost feels deliberate. That he used this story to sell his book was very disturbing to me. It wasn’t the case. There are many factual errors and inventions. I would have liked him or his publisher to reach out to fact check.”
Moby shares details of a short relationship he had with a Lana Del Rey, who was still going by the name Lizzy Grant. Moby’s memoir it seems maybe rife with inaccuracies that should have been caught by the publisher before release. Then It All Fell Apart, may be due to become a bestseller for all the wrong reasons.
