‘My Truth’: The movie that forced Corey Feldman to leave the USA

Child stardom can often take a dark turn when actors who’ve grown up under the bright lights of Hollywood struggle to match their earlier success later on in their careers, with Corey Feldman and Corey Haim standing out as stark examples.

In the 1980s, the duo became household names and garnered a legion of adoring fans, as Feldman attracted notice for his performances in Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter, Gremlins, The Goonies, Stand by Me, and The Lost Boys, all of which were hugely popular hits, with several of them gaining enduring cult status in the aftermath.

Alongside Haim, the dual-pronged Coreys were the poster boys for teenage success in Hollywood, but they each experienced plenty of well-publicised personal issues as they struggled to reconcile with the challenges of their early years. As well as alcohol and drug problems, the pair eventually outlined a troubling string of allegations perpetuating the predatory environment they were repeatedly subjected to, with Feldman even producing a documentary on the subject.

In March 2020, Feldman premiered My Truth: The Rape of the Two Coreys, which aimed new allegations at several well-known industry figures. Although the premiere was held at the Directors Guild of America’s headquarters in Los Angeles, the actor made it open to everyone by streaming the feature-length doc in its entirety for anyone willing to pay a $20 fee for the privilege.

There were issues with the stream from the beginning, though, with so-called technical problems forcing Feldman to claim that hackers were actively sabotaging My Truth from being broadcast. With the world being as cynical a place as it is, there were inevitably those convinced the entire thing was a hoax, with Feldman’s suspiciously rehearsed-looking performance driving the conspiracy theory.

Some even reported they’d paid the $20 multiple times and never been able to watch the movie at all, which then snowballed into another conspiracy claiming Feldman had taken the money and run after he made it known on social media that he was fleeing the United States.

That came after he no-showed a post-screening event, and while March 2020 was hardly the easiest time to hop on a plane without issue and abscond to the other side of the world, it didn’t deter Feldman. Not only that, but he suggested that as a result of the new allegations made in My Truth, he’d done it for his own safety.

Feldman offered that he’d “gone into hiding” internationally, and even though he’d said publicly he and his wife had jetted off “to unwind and heal ourselves” before their flight back to the States was cancelled, he intimated that there were other nefarious forces in play.

“I needed to go underground after the release of the film, coupled with multiple attacks from the people who have been trying to silence me,” he said, adding another layer of mystery to his whereabouts and behaviour immediately after My Truth‘s premiere.
