The movie Megan Fox wants to delete from history: “No one should ever see that”
Every actor has regrets, although some are much more understandable than others. I mean, it’s hard to understand why Burt Reynolds would regret Boogie Nights – it’s an undeniably great film. But Megan Fox regretting Jonah Hex? I can understand that.
The actor rose to prominence in the 2000s with her role in the Transformers series, with her position in the film as a piece of eye candy above anything else certainly getting her career off to an interesting start. Suddenly, every teenage boy was obsessed with Fox; they’d come to the Michael Bay movie for big trucks and left with a sexual awakening.
Fox didn’t want to be viewed through this objectified lens, though, so she took on some roles that stood in harsh opposition, like Jennifer’s Body. A tale of monstrous female rebellion, it was unfortunately marketed all wrong, with posters emphasising Fox’s body and schlocky horror rather than what the movie actually was – a feminist exploration of rage.
Her next role, however, came to be a significant regret, because it was simply awful. Jonah Hex, directed by Jimmy Hayward, was a major flop, only grossing $11million against its $47m budget. With the likes of Josh Brolin, Michael Fassbender, and John Malkovich joining the cast, you’d think it would’ve fared a bit better, but there was no saving the movie.
Fox earned a nomination for ‘Worst Actress’ from the Golden Raspberry Awards, and she looks back on the role with embarrassment. It was certainly not her finest hour. Critic Roger Ebert wrote in his two-star review of the film, “The presence of Lilah in the film is easily explained: She is played by Megan Fox.” Clearly, her role wasn’t one of much substance.
Looking back at the movie, Fox boldly declared that it’s a piece of cinema that no one – and she means absolutely no one – needs to watch. Talking to Celebrity TV, she discussed the possibility of making a movie that her children could watch, which led her to use the opportunity to shit-talk the bizarre western movie.
She said, “It would be nice to make some things that they can see, yeah, because something like Jennifer’s Body I’m not going to let them see for a long time. Something like Jonah Hex, I’m not going to let them see ever, no one should ever see that movie.”
Clearly, Fox isn’t proud to have been part of such a disaster. Who would be? All actors have a terrible movie under their belt, but unfortunately for Fox, hers is one of the worst movies of the 2010s. It didn’t get much better for the actor following Jonah Hex, either, with her next film, 2011’s Passion Play, also receiving resoundingly negative reviews. Seems like she needed to ditch her agent.
She wasn’t the only star who hated Jonah Hex, though. Brolin also criticised the movie, telling Collider, “Oh, Jonah Hex, hated it. Hated it. The experience of making it – that would have been a better movie based on what we did. As opposed to what ended up happening to it, which is going back and reshooting 66 pages in 12 days.” It appears that the movie is better left forgotten.
