The one movie Emma Stone would watch forever: “On a loop, over and over”
When Emma Stone stepped on stage to receive her second Oscar for ‘Best Actress’, she was only 35 years old. Doesn’t that just make you want to be sick?
The star – who won for La La Land and Poor Things, in case you were wondering – has achieved a staggering amount of success in her brief time on Earth. Awards, box office triumphs, culturally significant, getting to hang out with Yorgos Lanthimos. It’s a life anyone would envy.
Considering the incredible impact she’s had on the movie industry, it’s no shock that people are very interested in what Stone likes to watch in her rare moments of downtime. In one interview, she called Charlie Chaplin’s City Lights her favourite movie. This was backed up by a discussion she had with Letterboxd, which revealed that the silent classic was one of her ‘Four Favourites’.
However, when it comes to the film she could never get sick of, Chaplin takes a backseat to four other legends of the entertainment industry. If she had to pick one film to watch for the rest of her life, it would still be a comedy, but one made by a legendary band instead of a legendary actor.
“The only movie I can watch on a loop, over and over, is Help!, the Beatles movie,” she explained to Huffpost after being asked what DVD she would choose to be stranded with on a desert island. “It’s so funny and irreverent and great.”
Following the success of their first big screen outing, A Hard Day’s Night, the ‘Fab Four’ decided to have a second shot at Hollywood in 1965. This time around, the plot revolves around Ringo and his jewellery habits. The vastly underrated drummer (fight me) gets himself into a sticky situation by putting on a cursed ring that denotes him as a sacrifice for a tribal ritual. Cue the Liverpool lads running around, skiing, being shrunken down to microscopic size, going to war and enduring all sorts of other scrapes as the sadistic cult try to hunt poor Ringo down. It’s just as nutty as it sounds.
Stone has quite the personal history with The Beatles, particularly Paul McCartney. She has a tattoo on her wrist that was designed by the great man, in reference to “Blackbird” being her mother’s favourite song. The pair actually worked together on a music video for Macca’s song “Who Cares”. Stone plays a patient who, after being hypnotised by a doctor played by the Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Famer, enters a crazy world of colour and sound. You can check it out here.
It’s clear that The Beatles have always played a huge part in Stone’s life, from their music to their movies to their artistic skills. It’s one thing to be a fan of someone, but it’s another thing entirely to contribute to their creative catalogue. When Stone appeared alongside McCartney on screen, that must have been a surreal, but extremely satisfying moment. Not everyone gets the chance to be hypnotised by one of their idols.
