Mitski explains why she avoided a “proper tour” for her new album

Mitski has revealed why she has chosen against a traditional tour in support of her latest album, Nothing’s About to Happen to Me.

The album arrived in late February, but rather than spend the next 18-months on a globe-trotting schedule, Mitski instead chose to play a series of limited performances in select cities across the globe.

Now, in a video posted on X, she has confirmed this was to allow herself to prioritise writing. “This message is for those of you who might have noticed that I’m not doing a ‘proper tour’ for this album, I’m still performing, but for a shorter period of time on fewer occasions,” Mitski began.

She then went on to “explain why”, revealing, “The short version is that I want to write more, so I have to pull back on performing.”

Mitski continued, “For those of you who are willing to sit longer, you can watch this. I love performing, obviously, well, not obviously, but if you’ve come to my shows and you know my work, I hope you know I adore performing. It’s a privilege to get to do it every time. I’m really grateful.”

The singer then caveated this by stating, “I also love writing, and I think they feed into each other,” before clarifying her position, “But, I can’t do it at the same time. Some artists maybe can, but I’m not someone who can do it all.”

She added, “Right now, I feel a stronger pull towards writing more, and, in order to do that, I just have to cut back on performing. It doesn’t mean I’m never gonna tour again, never gonna perform again, that’s not what it means.”

However, Mitski stressed, “At this point in my life, I just feel more excited about writing a lot, and I feel really, really excited about potentially getting to show you what comes of this writing period.”

After previously performing her new album in New York, Los Angeles, and Mexico City, next month, Mitski is taking Nothing’s About to Happen to Me overseas with dates lined up in Istanbul, Paris, two nights at AFAS Live in Amsterdam, as well as the Forest National in Brussels.

The European leg of Mitski’s tour will conclude on May 21st at the world-famous Royal Albert Hall in London, her only UK date.

At the end of May, Mitski will head to Australia for four shows at the Sydney Opera House, before heading to Asia in July for concerts in Manila, Bangkok, Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore.
