Pearl Jam’s Mike McCready announces new grunge opera set in Seattle during 1990s
Pearl Jam’s Mike McCready has announced a “graphic album” titled Farewell To Seasons, which doubles as a rock opera set in 1990s Seattle.
“I’m incredibly excited to announce my new graphic novel with Z2, Farewell to Seasons,” McCready said in a statement.
He added, “It’s a story I’ve been developing for many years, inspired by the creativity, community, and chaos of the Seattle music scene.”
As such, he explained that Farewell to Seasons will be a historical fantasy set in the world he has created; alongside the graphic novel, McCready shared, “There will also be a ‘lost’ rock opera connected to the story, featuring original music written from the perspective of David Williams, one of the main characters.”
McCready has worked alongside writer Mark Sable and illustrator Sebastian Piraz to bring the work to life. It is set to arrive sometime in September.
Embellishing on the themes of the project, the iconic musician has revealed that the story reflects “the tight sense of community that forged its powerful backbone in the Nineties,” while also acting as an “unflinching depiction… of that seminal era.”
However, there will be a darker side to the offering, as the work investigates “an oily darkness that threatens to drag [the characters] down when they are possessed by self-doubt and fear.”
As of late, Pearl Jam took a break following their friendly split with longtime drummer, Matt Cameron. He has since explained that he exited the band due to the long, three-hour shows they were known for playing.
Frontman Eddie Vedder has since confirmed that the band is “in the lab, we’re woodshedding, excited. As much as we’d like to have done it the way we did it forever — and we’ll still be able to do that thing, I think we’re all just excited for the future.”
