If, like us, lockdown fatigue has officially reached new levels, if it feels like the proverbial lactic acid of being continuously cooped up is starting to burn and eat away at the muscles that help you smile, then we have just the thing for you, the latest song from Sydney’s own Middle Kids.

The band are set to release their second album, Today We’re The Greatest, later this week and have given us another taste of what’s to come by sharing the title track from the LP. As you might expect, it is one of the most uplifting songs we’ve heard in a while and made us smile and, dare we say it, look to the future with some optimism.

‘Today We’re The Greatest’ is largely centred upon the shining vocal performance of Hannah Joy who, makes good on her name, and provides one of the more ethereal yet uplifting vocal showings in months. The song simply reeks of good times up ahead and should hopefully kick start your day, whenever you hear it.

Speaking about the track, Joy said in a statement: “This is a simple song of people being TINY and our lives being FLEETING but in that we are EPIC and GREAT,”a subject which hasn’t really been broached in a while, thanks to the pandemic.

“It’s finding the beauty and majesty of the every day,” continues the band’s singer, providing a positive spin on the world around us. “Therein lies life and meaning. LIFE IS GORY AND BORING SOMETIMES: it’s both hectic and mundane and we have to accept both.”

“I want to make music that loves its listener,” Joy continues. “Music that makes people feel seen, seen in the tiny little places that hide away in their hearts. I want people to hear our music, and feel a sense of love. And when I say love, it can be challenging, intense and tough. But it’s in the guts.”

If Joy was aiming to make us all feel a little bit more, we’d say she’s succeeded. Not because we haven’t all been resolutely lost in our emotions over recent months — in fact, that’s pretty much all we’ve done. But, because she and the rest of Middle Kids have opened up the other half of our hearts, the one where we can find happiness in the smallest of things, like a lilting indie-pop song.
