Michiel Blanchart to direct new ‘Final Destination’ movie
Belgian filmmaker Michiel Blanchart has been chosen to direct New Line’s follow-up to 2025’s Final Destination: Bloodlines.
The most recent instalment in the franchise easily smashed the box office record, making more in its opening weekend than the last movie did in its entire run. It returned to the screens after a 14-year break, Warner Bros.
The movie, prior to the triumphant Bloodlines, was released in 2011. Directed by Steven Quale, Far Out rated the film highly, stating that it “is the first movie since the original that does the most to change the franchise and has the most fun doing so in the process, featuring some of the craziest deaths of the entire series.”
In 2025, Zach Lipovsky and Adam Stein zapped some life back into the deadly series. Now, it’s Blanchart’s turn.
However, The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that no offer has been made just yet, but the studio has its heart set on Blanchart. He will be making his English-language debut with the feature.
Lori Evans Taylor, who wrote Bloodlines along with Gary Busick, is penning the new script.
The Final Destination franchise has enjoyed steady success over its time, raking in over $1 billion worldwide. Therefore, it is New Line’s third-biggest horror franchise behind the over $2.73 billion grossed by the Conjuring Universe and the $1.2 billion grossed by the It films.
Interestingly, Blanchart has only one feature to his name. His 2023 short, You’re Dead, Hélène, was shortlisted for the best live-action short film category at the 2023 Oscars. His 2024 action crime thriller, Night Call (Le nuit se traine), was a roaring success at the Magritte Awards, winning ten of 11 nominations.
The cast has not yet been announced, but due to the nature of the overall conceit, it is unlikely we will see many returners. Watch the trailer for Final Destination: Bloodlines below.
