Michael Mann confirms ‘Heat’ sequel will begin filming in 2026
Director Michael Mann has confirmed that the sequel to his classic film Heat should begin filming at some point in 2026.
The filmmaker was speaking while appearing at the Busan Film Festival (per Variety) when he gave an update on the status of the much anticipated Heat 2, which was announced to be in development in 2023.
He said: “I look forward to possibly shooting it in 2026. We’re in the middle of doing all the things — budgeting, scheduling, casting process.”
Mann revealed few other details about the process of the film, other than what has previously been announced in terms of it being based on his sequel novel from 2022. There are rumours that Adam Driver could be taking on the lead role, after working with the filmmaker on his last movie, Ferrari.
When this speculation began upon the announcement of Heat 2, Mann told Deadline at the time: “Let me put it this way: Adam and I got along like a house on fire [on Ferrari]. We have the same work ethic – which is pretty intense. We like each other, and we had a great time working together artistically.”
Elsewhere at the Busan Film Festival, Mann also shed light on the making of the original 1995 crime drama starring Al Pacino, but emphasised that the film focused on far more than just its leading star.
“I don’t think it’s Al Pacino’s film,” he explained. “That film’s De Niro’s film, Val Kilmer’s film, Jon Voight’s film, Mykelti Williamson. It was an ensemble of brilliant actors and one of the best experiences ever as a director.”
With Heat 2 presumably following a similar suit, Mann added: “The film is made for the big screen, the scale, the artistic construction, all for the big screen,” noting the value of this as it displays “multiple layers of actors’ acting as well as the complexity of their characters.”
