Michael Douglas slams Donald Trump: “I am worried, I am nervous”

Michael Douglas has slammed Donald Trump at the 50th anniversary screening of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, accusing the US president of “flirting with autocracy”.

During a screening which celebrated 50 years since One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, which Douglas produced, the retired American actor was asked a barrage of questions about the worsening political climate in his country.

He began his remarks with the comment, “Our President’s name has been mentioned enough.”

He then added, “I look at it generally as the fact how precious democracy is, how vulnerable it is, and how it always has to be protected. Right now, our country is flirting with autocracy, as [are] some other democracies in this world. I hope what we’re struggling with now [helps us remember] all the hard work that the Czechs did. Democracy is not to be taken for granted.”

He continued, “The disappointing thing is that politics now seems to be for profit. We maintained an idealism in the US which does not exist now. The news speaks for itself. I am worried, I am nervous. And I just think it’s about the responsibility not for someone else to look out for us but for us to look out for each other.”

Douglas has never been quiet about his firm political stance. The star is a registered Democrat and has publicly supported various Democratic politicians through donations, including Barack Obama, Christopher Dodd, Al Franken, Michael Bloomberg, and Joe Biden.

Fellow producer Saul Zaentz also attended the event and ensured to add to Douglas’ tirade. Aware of the importance of the date, he commented, “Yesterday, July 4th, the malignant, narcissist, want-to-be dictator that occupies the White House signed a bill that was passed by his cruel heartless followers to make the rich richer and take food and health care away from the people who need it. A very sad July 4th for the USA.“

He is but the next in a long list of celebrities who are making their opposition to Trumpism clear. Many global superstars attended the ‘No Kings’ rally in New York City on June 14th. There, Avengers actor Mark Ruffalo made similar comments, stating, “Trump has made himself a king and a dictator, and we don’t see an opposition that’s powerful enough to stand up against the trampling of our rights, and trampling the Constitution that’s happening every single day with executive orders.”
