Michael Caine to end retirement for new Vin Diesel movie

Legendary British actor Michael Caine is officially coming out of acting retirement.

The accomplished star, who won two Oscars during his impressive career for Hannah and Her Sisters and The Cider House Rules, made his supposed final performance in 2023’s The Great Escaper. The film, which saw him star opposite Glenda Jackson, followed Caine’s character, a war veteran, who runs away from his care home.

It was a pretty solid exit for the actor, now aged 92, who made his screen debut all the way back in 1950 with an uncredited part in Morning Departure, but it seems like Caine can’t be kept away from the big screen for too long.

It has now been revealed via Deadline that he is set to come back to acting to star alongside one of his unlikely pals, Vin Diesel. The pair acted alongside each other in 2015’s The Last Witch Hunter, and with a currently untitled sequel now underway, Caine is reportedly in talks to reprise his role as Father Dolan.

Caine has heaped praise on Diesel in recent years. In his memoir, Don’t Look Back, You’ll Trip Over, Caine wrote, “Vin’s special. I love Vin. We first met at a dinner party about 30 years ago. I just instinctively greeted him with a hug and announced to the whole room, ‘This is my son!’”

He added, “Sometimes, you sense a connection. I just liked the guy immediately. He has a big heart.”

Caine was happy to make The Great Escaper his final project following an array of positive reviews for his performance. However, clearly, if anyone can tempt him out of retirement, it’s Vin Diesel.

The project is yet to start filming, but it seems like it’ll be happening very soon – much to delight of fans of the first movie. Diesel will be working as a producer as well as starring in the film, although little else is known about what the sequel might look like just yet.
