Mia Goth’s karaoke song of choice: “It’s a classic”

In 2008, a video of Robert Pattinson and Katy Perry singing ‘I’ll Make Love to You’ by Boyz II Men in a karaoke club in California went viral.

While most of the comments speculated on the pair’s affectionate behaviour, there was also something uniquely disarming about watching two A-list celebrities show their vulnerable sides singing (quite badly) at the top of their lungs.

Since then, celebrity karaoke sightings have become sought after pop fodder, with James Corden famously popularising the phenomenon with his Carpool Karaoke series, while famous crossovers include Rupert Grint singing ‘I Got You Babe’ in a dingy karaoke bar, and an unfortunate sighting of former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson singing ‘Sweet Caroline’ at a karaoke bar in Capri, Italy (that’s according to the Oxford Mail).

As such, asking for a celebrity’s favourite karaoke song is an excellent question to get a glimpse into their soul, an instant litmus test for the levels of ridiculous, cringe or showy they’re willing to go to prove that they’re just like the average millennial, nursing a lukewarm pint and screeching ‘Wonderwall’ by Oasis at a dinghy overpriced karaoke bar in Soho, London, on a Friday night.

For Suspiria actor Mia Goth, the answer was instant. The star of the trilogy of Pearl, X, and MaXXXine, who has perfected the blood-curdling high-pitched scream and insists she “fell into the horror genre”, chose the British singer Amy Winehouse as her go-to artist, ultimately settling on one of her most well-known tunes, ‘Rehab’. The song won her three Grammy Awards, including ‘Record of the Year’, ‘Song of the Year’ and ‘Best Female Pop Vocal Performance’.

Speaking about the song at the time, Winehouse said, “I asked my dad if he thought I needed to go. He said no, but I should give it a try. So, I did, for just 15 minutes. I went in, said ‘hello’ and explained that I drink because I am in love and have screwed up the relationship. Then I walked out.”

Goth described the song as “a classic” and revealed that she was an Amy Winehouse “fanatic” when she was younger and used to “camp outside her house” to spot the singer. The actor proceeded to sing the song a cappella style in her well-known high-pitched voice for W Magazine, before later reenacting her spine-chilling scream from Pearl.

The actor, who spent time in Brazil and Canada as a child before settling in South East London with her mother, originally started her career as a model before transitioning to acting with Lars von Trier’s 2019 erotic drama Nymphomaniac alongside Charlotte Gainsbourg.

Goth has been tipped to star in an upcoming remake of the ’90s vampire horror, Blade, although filming has not yet started amid a troubled development process, as well as Christopher Nolan’s upcoming Star Wars: Starfighter.
