The word ‘icon’ is too often attributed to below-par performers and artists. It seems these days one need only gain themselves a healthy meme to be considered for the accolade. However, the rapper and hip-hop hero MF Doom was most certainly an icon and the tragedy of his passing, confirmed on 31st Dec by his family, will be felt across the entire globe.
The masked man has made a name for himself as being one of the most lyrically gifted rappers around. Able to hop on any beat he liked, Doom made a career out of being in the middle of so many Venn diagrams. Smart, searing and unafraid to push himself creatively, Doom has become the foreword in hip-hop purity.
Taking to MF Doom’s Instagram account, his family alerted the rapper’s fans to the tragedy: “The greatest husband, father, teacher, student, business partner, lover and friend I could ever ask for. Thank you for all the things you have shown, taught and given to me, our children and our family. Thank you for teaching me how to forgive beings and give another chance, not to be so quick to judge and write off. Thank you for showing how not to be afraid to love and be the best person I could ever be.
“My world will never be the same without you. Words will never express what you and Malachi mean to me, I love both and adore you always. May THE ALL continue to bless you, our family and the planet.”
Born in London but moving to New York as a child, Doom will be regarded as one of the most influential figures in hip-hop history. Known for outlandish collaborations and iconic rhythm, Doom’s legacy is a long and everlasting one.
