Metallica team up with Apple for “game-changing” VR concert film
Metallica have joined forces with Apple for an innovative VR concert film which was filmed in Mexico City.
The concert took place in the Mexican capital last September as part of the band’s world tour to promote their most recent album, M72. The immersive concert experience will be available to watch from March 14th on Apple Vision Pro and features full performances of their classic tracks, ‘Whiplash’, ‘One’, and ‘Enter Sandman‘.
The footage was recorded in ultra-high-resolution 180-degree video and also feature’s Apple’s spatial audio technology. It promises to capture the concert “from vantage points as close up as the famed Snake Pit, to wide-angle views of the band’s energetic performance in the round.”
In a statement, Lars Ulrich of Metallica said: “Game changing is putting it lightly. Seeing our concert like that, along with the energy of the Mexico City fans — it’s very immersive, and it’s super fun. We’ve always been interested in pushing the boundaries, and Metallica on Apple Vision Pro is exactly that.”
To launch the new immersive concert film, Ulrich appeared in conversation with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe at SXSW on March 11th. The drummer said of the process: “It was just so cool, the filming part, but then the editing part — the first few times having the headset on and being able to do that and see and also hear the (spatial) audio. It’s just fucking crazy.”
Meanwhile, Tor Myhren, Apple’s vice president of marketing communications, added: “Apple Immersive Video transforms the way people experience storytelling, and we’re thrilled to collaborate with Metallica on a concert unlike any before it”
Myhren continued: “With Metallica on Apple Vision Pro, you feel like you’re right there: front row, backstage, and even on stage with one of the biggest bands of all time.”
