Met Police question Russell Brand over sex offence allegations
The Metropolitan Police have interviewed Russell Brand regarding allegations of historical sex offences.
This follows an investigation conducted by The Sunday Times, The Times, and Channel 4’s Dispatches uncovered accusations involving rape, sexual assaults, and emotional abuse against the British comedian and actor.
The accusations span a number of years from 2006 to 2013, which included when he previously hosted shows for Radio 6 and BBC Radio 2.
The Metropolitan Police said a man in his 40s attended a police station in south London on Thursday, as reported by The Times. “He was interviewed under caution by detectives in relation to three non-recent sexual offences. Inquiries continue,” the Police commented.
The Metropolitan Police stated they had received several reports of sexual offences in London and various locations across the country following the collaborative investigation.
On Tuesday, November 14th, the BBC revealed that they have since received two new allegations, which took place while Brand was employed by the broadcaster. Additionally, a third allegation was made in 2019, relating to an alleged incident which is claimed to have occurred at the BBC’s premises in Los Angeles in 2008.
In a statement, Peter Johnston, the BBC’s director of editorial complaints, said: “Following recent media reporting, we have undertaken significant work to identify what complaints or allegations were made to the BBC about Russell Brand’s conduct. The passage of time means this is not a straightforward task – for example, the BBC did not maintain a centralised record of staff complaints regarding bullying and harassment (including sexual harassment) at the time.”
Brand has denied all claims and has consistently said that his relationships were “always consensual”.
