Meryl Streep set to return for ‘The Devil Wears Prada’ sequel
Meryl Streep is set to reprise one of her most iconic roles, with Disney set to go ahead with plans for a forthcoming The Devil Wears Prada sequel. As the studio begins developing a follow-up to the beloved 2006 chick flick, Streep is set to step into Miranda Priestly’s Prada shoes again.
Streep has played more than her fair share of beloved characters throughout her incredible and versatile career. However, none of them has been as cutting as Miranda Priestly, the savage fashion magazine editor who puts Anne Hathaway’s character of Andy Sachs through her paces.
The 2006 film, based on a 2003 novel, became an instant classic. In particular, it became a career-defining role for Streep. She was nominated in the ‘Best Actress’ category at the Academy Awards, Critics Choice Awards and Baftas for the depiction. Streep also won the Golden Globe for the same category. Despite being a role in a comedic film, Streep’s performance was seriously brilliant.
Now, according to Puck, Disney is developing a sequel to the successful original. The film’s screenwriter, Aline Brosh McKenna, is in talks to return and write the follow-up. The new version will see Streep’s character of Priestly attempt to navigate the decline of print journalism and the modernising of the industry, facing off against her old inferiors like Emily Blunt’s original role of Emily Charlton.
It’s not said who else from the original might return, such as Anne Hathaway or Stanley Tucci, but Streep is at the centre of the new story. Having carried the original within a role that has become one of her most well-known and recognisable, with plenty of quotable, sharp one-liners, it feels as if a return to the film’s cinematic world wouldn’t be possible without Streep at the helm.
The three main actors of Streep, Hathaway and Blunt have discussed the film a lot recently, perhaps pre-empting the sequel. The trio reunited on stage at February’s Screen Actors Guild Awards. Hathaway and Blunt also reunited as part of Variety’s ‘Actors On Actors’ video interview series, where they reminisced about the film and revisited some of its best lines and most iconic moments.
“We just had a joy bomb of a time on that movie,” Blunt told Hathaway. “I don’t know if any of us knew it was going to become what it did. It’s quoted to me every week.” She added, “It will be the movie that changed my life.”
These could simply be moments of old work colleagues reflecting on good memories, but as talks of a sequel spark up, they could be preparing for something bigger. As all cast members talk extremely positively about their experience working on the film, it might be expected that Disney wouldn’t struggle to bring them back on board for another.
Either way, the sequel is tapping into a cinematic goldmine. The original film was a huge box-office smash. It earned $326.7million worldwide, as well as gaining the cast plenty of critical praise and awards accolades.
