Maya Hawke reveals Uma Thurman told her to “keep your shoes on” near Quentin Tarantino

Maya Hawke has revealed advice from her mother, Uma Thurman, specifically about dealing with director Quentin Tarantino.

Hawke and her mother have both starred in films directed by Quentin Tarantino; Hawke was in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, while Thurman famously appeared in 1994’s Pulp Fiction, 2003’s Kill Bill: Vol 1 and 2004’s Vol 2.

Recently speaking on the Good Hang with Amy Poehler, Hawke recalled that her mother earnestly warned her that, when she was in Tarantino’s company, she should “keep your shoes on”.

One of the most iconic of Tarantino’s “foot shots” is at the beginning of Kill Bill Vol. 1, where he captures Thurman’s foot while her character, The Bride, tries to regain control of her body. We also see The Bride’s foot squish Elle Driver’s eye in Vol. 2. Therefore, Thurman has had a lot of experience with his special interest.

In 2021, the director responded to the gossip surrounding his alleged fetish. He said, “I don’t take it seriously,” he said. “There’s a lot of feet in a lot of good directors’ movies. That’s just good direction.”

He went on to add, “Like, before me, the person foot fetishism was defined by was Luis Buñuel, another film director. And Hitchcock was accused of it and Sofia Coppola has been accused of it.”

Lucky for Hawke, she wasn’t made to show her feet in the Brad Pitt-led movie Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. However, her co-star, The Substance actor Margaret Qualley, showed off her feet in the project, though she recalled having her own argument with the director over the choice.

Elsewhere, Hawke is set to star in the upcoming Hunger Games movie, The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, alongside the likes of Jesse Plemons, Joseph Zada and Whitney Peak, who will play the lead roles in the forthcoming movie.
