Matt Helders teases new music

It’s been almost two decades since the release of Matt Helders‘ one and only solo album, if anyone could even call it that, but the musician has hinted that things could be about to change at long last.

The Arctic Monkeys drummer and backing vocalist has been focusing his energies elsewhere since he mixed the 21st instalment in the Late Night Tales record series back in 2008, where he put his own spin on an eclectic list of tracks from the likes of Goblin, Mos Def, The Stooges, and The Black Keys.

Obviously, being the drummer of a band the size of Arctic Monkeys is a full-time occupation, but Helders has continued collaborating with other artists as the band continues to tour and record, even if it’s been a while since The Car and the album’s headline tour ended in October 2023.

Admittedly, Helders hasn’t given anyone a lot to go on, but that’s probably the point. Mystery doe soften lead to an increase in intrigue.

Uploading a clip to social media that sees him tinkering with some equipment in the studio is an intentionally vague move that doesn’t confirm or deny anything, but it’s more than enough to start stoking the fires of excitement.

If it had anything to do with Arctic Monkeys, then it stands to reason the teaser wouldn’t come from a brief snippet captured in remarkably low definition and poor lighting. His Late Night Tales record was a DJ mix, but he’s performed with an eclectic list of artists in various capacities, including Toddla T, Iggy Pop, The Last Shadow Puppets, and Lady Gaga.

Helders has also remixed tracks from Paul Weller, Duran Duran, The Hives, and Roots Manuva, so there’s no telling what he’s potentially cooking up in the studio. Either way, he wouldn’t drop such a blatant hint if there wasn’t something in the pipeline.
