Glynis Johns, ‘Mary Poppins’ star, dead at 100

Glynis Johns, the stage and screen actor best known for playing Mrs Banks in Mary Poppins, has died aged 100.

The British star was regarded as one of the last surviving figures of Old Hollywood. According to a statement from her manager, Mitch Clem, she died “peacefully” at an assisted living home in Los Angeles on January 4th. As of yet, no exact cause of death has been given.

Speaking in a new press statement, Clem said he had a “heavy” heart and was saddened to lose the “beloved” actor after many years working together.

“Glynis powered her way through life with intelligence, wit, and a love for performance, affecting millions of lives,” he said. “She entered my life early in my career and set a very high bar on how to navigate this industry with grace, class, and truth. Your own truth. Her light shined very brightly for 100 years.

“She had a wit that could stop you in your tracks powered by a heart that loved deeply and purely. Today is a sombre day for Hollywood.”

Johns rose to prominence in the 1940s after making her screen debut in 1938. Throughout her 80-year career, she enjoyed more than 60 movie appearances and 30 stage roles. Alongside Golden Globe and Academy Award nominations, Johns won a Tony Award in 1973 for originating the role of Desirée Armfeldt in the Broadway musical A Little Night Music.

“Not only do we mourn the passing of our dear Glynis, but we mourn the end of the Golden Age of Hollywood,” Clem added.
