Screaming Trees frontman Mark Lanegan is the latest in a long line of musicians to have found themselves in a verbal back and forth with former Oasis man Liam Gallagher—and this one not looking like it will simmer down anytime soon.
The online feud all started when Lanegan suggested that the Oasis singer once quit a US tour with his Mancunian band to avoid a scheduled fight with Lanegan. It’s been revealed by the singer in his new rock memoir.
Lanegan remembers: “He came up to where we were sitting, ‘Howling Branches,’ he shouted.”
He continued: “I realised he was addressing me and attempting a weak joke with the over-the-top intensity of a put-down. ‘‘F**k off, you stupid f**king idiot,’ was my brief, blasé retort.”
“What did you say?’ Gallagher yelled. ‘Are you mad?’ He launched into a strange, lurching half-dance, lunging forward as though to physically attack, only to back up again while gesticulating crazily.
“He intended for it to look intimidating. He looked f***ing pathetic.”
Backstage tensions had grown out of control by the time Lanegan offered the Mancunian a fair fight in Miami when their paths were destined to cross again. “I detested bullies and refused to put up with them. Liam Gallagher was an obvious poser, a playground bully. Like all bullies, he was also a total p***y.”
“He had quit and bailed before I could have a go at him before his promised playground battle royale in Miami.
“Typical, I thought. That phoney motherf***er had p***ed his pants and gone home to mama before I had a chance to blow this whole thing up myself.”
Gallagher then responded to this claim with a flurry of tweets aimed at the former Queens Of The Stone Age man yesterday, stating: “Mark lannegn(sic) here’s how I saw it I asked you your bands name I was fucking around and called it something else you being an upiight(sic) junkie and not having a sense of humour got your little grungy knickers in a twist another bullshitter trying to sell a book LG x”
Lanegan then quote tweeted that Gallagher tweet and stated that the offer of a fight is still well and tryly on the table: “Coke addicts are junkies too you fucking tool, the stupidest kind. Still trying to make like you’re hard. i could have then and still could put serious hurt on you. leave it alone dickhead unless youre actually ready to finally step up”.
He also took aim at Liam’s songwriting capabilities, writing: “Liam has never written a decent song by himself or wiith the teams of songwriters hired to do it for him. I would however gladly write with Noel, he was the one blessed with the talent, wit and brains in the family.”
When a fan asked Lanegan if he was up for a charity boxing match with the Mancunian, he simply responded “bare-knuckle”. Know we will see if Gallagher will rise above the taunts or help himself to round two of his favourite past time, online sparring which he is currently undefeated at.
