Made famous by Johnny Cash and Elvis Presley, Marilyn Manson has now shared his version of the American folk staple song, ‘God’s Gonna Cut You Down’. He’s brought out a dark new video to go alongside it.
Manson’s version of the song is naturally a little different from the twanging, folk style that both Cash and Presley used. Manson employs a more industrial edge to proceedings and the track takes on a new life because of it.
The song has been in Manson’s live repertoire for a little while now but this is the first proper release of the track. It comes ahead of an expected new album which Manson revealed was almost done.
If this track is a marker of what’s to come we’re very excited. The single comes along with an ominous new video to boot. Manson drafted in director Tim Mattia to help with proceedings having previously worked together on ‘Hey, Cruel World’. It features Manson cradling his guitar and later a shotgun while he digs graves for his victims. Well, it is Marilyn Manson after all.
In an interview with NME, Manson shared that the new album was also complete. “I wanted to tell stories with this record, and it’s sort of like a wax museum of my thoughts, a study of the chamber of horrors in my head,” he said. “All the romance and hope you can have in the world, here in the End Times where it can be a different kind of apocalypse for each person listening to the record.”
