Margot Robbie launches defence of panned movie ‘Babylon’: “It’s a great film”
Margot Robbie has launched a defence of her 2022 movie Babylon, which was largely panned at the box office, saying, “It’s a great film”.
The actor made her feelings about the movie known in a new interview with Letterboxd alongside Colin Farrell, ahead of the release of their latest cinematic effort, A Big Bold Beautiful Journey.
Playing a game in which they had to guess a film they had previously starred in based on one-sentence reviews, Robbie said she had a message for fans of Babylon. “I always wondered if you people were out there,” she joked, before adding, “when it got slated at the time, both critically and at the box office, I was confused ’cause I think it’s an amazing movie and one I’m very, very proud of being in.”
Going on to consider why the film, in which she appears opposite Brad Pitt as a Hollywood star during the rise and fall of the 1920s, has perhaps garnered more of a fanbase now than it initially did, Robbie noted: “I always thought maybe this will be one of those movies that, 20 years later, everyone’s like ‘Oh my God, Babylon didn’t do well at the time? That’s crazy.’”
The actor laughed as she continued: “I didn’t even have to wait that long. So if you love Babylon, I love you and we think alike when it comes to movies – ‘cause it’s a great film.”
It comes as Robbie is set to re-enter the Hollywood landscape with a possibly similar polarising film on the horizon. She will star in Emerald Fennel’s adaptation of Wuthering Heights alongside Jacob Elordi early next year, with a trailer that dropped last week, revealing that Charli XCX has written songs on the soundtrack.
Her current film, A Big Bold Beautiful Journey, will be released in cinemas on September 19th.
