Madonna hits out at Donald Trump over cancelling World Aids Day: “Ridiculous, it’s absurd, it’s unthinkable”
Madonna has hit out at US President Donald Trump over his cancellation of World Aids Day, branding the move as “ridiculous”, “absurd”, and “unthinkable”.
The Queen of Pop took to her Instagram on December 1st, on what would ordinarily be the day in which the cause of finding a cure for Aids is highlighted around the world, to denounce Trump’s efforts to stop acknowledging it.
“For four decades, this day has been internationally recognized around the world by people from all walks of life, because millions of people’s lives have been touched by the HIV crisis,” she said in her post.
However, going on to explain how the fight for recognition is still carrying on to this day, Madonna added: “Donald Trump has announced that World Aids Day should no longer be acknowledged.”
She continued: “It’s one thing to order federal agents to refrain from commemorating this day, but to ask the general public to pretend it never happened is ridiculous, it’s absurd, it’s unthinkable.”
The pop star explained her own experiences of being touched by the devastating disease, noting, “I bet he’s never watched his best friend die of Aids, held their hand, and watched the blood drain from their face as they took their last breath at the age of 23.”
She signed off her post by imploring her followers to continue recognising and raising awareness of finding a cure for Aids, saying: “I will continue to honour World Aids Day, and I hope you will honour it with me.”
This is not the first time Madonna has vocally stood up against Trump’s political measures, claiming at the start of this year, during the first week of his new administration, that the president is “slowly dismantling all the freedoms we have”.
She has also lent her status to a number of humanitarian causes, imploring Pope Leo to visit Gaza “before it’s too late”.
