Madonna breaks British chart record with new album ‘Confessions II’

Madonna has created British chart history after her new album, Confessions II, went to the top spot on July 10th.

It is now her 13th album to have reached number one in the UK, and more than 40 years after she first accomplished this feat with Like A Virgin in 1984.

She is now in fifth place in relation to the list of artists with the most number one albums in the UK after scoring her first chart-topping LP in 14 years.

With Confessions II, Madonna has also earned a unique record to her name, and is the first female American solo artist to earn a number one album in five different decades.

In a three-star review, Far Out wrote of Confessions II, “There is a boldness to this entire record that could have made it vulnerable. Tabloids, critics and the brutality of social media would have truly loved for this to be a clunky last-ditch attempt at pop relevancy from an artist who should have spent time compiling her greatest hits rather than trying to write new ones. But ultimately, the end result proves there was plenty of gas left in the tank.”

It also adds, “While the vignettes of influence feel like a blazing return to 1990s glory, there’s something optimistic about it. It looks forward to a hopeful future, one we were told didn’t actually exist.”

Madonna is yet to announce a tour in support of Confessions II, but did recently seemingly tease a headline set at Glastonbury Festival in 2027.

While speaking to Graham Norton for a special BBC programme, Madonna shared that following her upcoming tour, she had “something bigger” planned for summer 2027.

Upon being asked whether it was in the UK, she coyly replied, “It could be. Why do you have to know everything? I’ve told you a lot of interesting things, that’s what you get, and the rest you have to wait for.”

The ‘Like a Prayer’ singer cryptically added, “I heard this phrase a long time ago that the definition of being an adult is the ability to delay gratification.”
