American indie rocker Lucy Dacus has released the final preview of her upcoming LP, Home Video, with the new single ‘Brando’.

The last time we checked in with Dacus she was sharing the trials and trepidations of her Virginia Christian upbringing on the wistful ‘VBS’. ‘Brando’ continues this trend by honing in on specific memories and characters from her upbringing, this time focusing on a friend whose affections only go so far.

“’Brando’ refers to a very dramatic friend I had in high school whose whole personality was the media he consumed,” says Dacus. “He showed me a lot of amazing movies and music, but I think he was more interested in using me as a scrapbook of his own tastes than actually getting to know me. He claimed to know me better than anyone else but I started to feel like all he wanted from me was to be a scene partner in the movie of his life.”

As always, Dacus is laser-focused on turning the personal into the relatable. Picking up bits and pieces from her own personal story, in this case seeing Singinin the Rain and It’s a Wonderful Life while cutting school, lines like: “All I need you to admit/Is that you never knew me like you thought you did” are universal. Dacus excels at taking the most unique details of her own life and translating them into powerful expressions. You don’t have to see A Streetcar Named Desire in order to recall your own Fake Brando.

Dacus is going on one hell of a tour in 2021, with a whopping 42 shows stretched out across North America. Some of those shows will be headlining gigs featuring Far Out favourites like Bachelor and Bartees Strange as supporting acts, while others will find Dacus as the supporting act to Bright Eyes and Shakey Graves. During a time when most artists are still trying to figure out the details of returning to the stage, Dacus has already plotted out her entire summer.
