It’s been a huge week for Loyle Carner with news that he has reportedly been snapped up by Virgin Records to record an album and taken another step towards infiltrating the masses with the release of his first single proper, ‘Tierney Terrace’.
The tune won the Track of the Day title a few months back now when it first surfaced, but in order to give those in the know something new to get their teeth into, he has teamed up with Warp Records signee Kwes for the new one, ‘Florence’.
The song sees Londoner Kwes place his soulful, dexturous vocal over over a sharp breakbeat and minimalist piano loop.
Carner’s contribution is also as perfectly executed and personally touching as ever. Once again focussing on the premature transition he had to make to man of the house when he was a young man.
‘Florence’ sees Carner open up about his (fictional) sister this time around, from cooking her pancakes of a morning to walks in the park and bedtime stories – the twist being that it’s all fantasy.
It seems like if there is one artist around humble and grounded enough to handle the rigours of a huge deal such as this, it’s Loyle.
