Tiger King became one of the most talked-about shows of all time last year as it seemed to permeate everyone’s lockdown at once with a healthy dose of mayhem, murder, mystery and mullets.
The central subject of the show, Joe Exotic, had first been introduced to the world by legendary documentarian, Louis Theroux, ten years ago when the feline fiend featured in America’s Most Dangerous Pets. Now, the bespectacled fearless journalist is set the return to the story after a string of escalating developments following the conclusion of the Netflix series.
The project, currently under the working title of Louis Theroux: The Cult of Joe Exotic, will reflect on unseen footage from his 10-year-old documentary America’s Most Dangerous Pets. Deadline has also reported that Theroux will also meet the team trying to get Exotic out of prison and those closest to him, some of whom have never spoken on camera before.
In a statement Theroux revealed, “This is one of those quintessentially American stories, taking place in the heartland of Oklahoma, with a cast of characters almost too colourful and larger-than-life to be believed. I spent eight or nine days filming at the park back in 2011, over the course of three separate visits. I’d forgotten how much we shot until I went back into the footage during lockdown. It’s extraordinary how much was there. Since then the story just got stranger and bigger, and in going back at the end of last year I uncovered a real-life drama that took me in directions I never could have expected.” Now that’s part statement – part irresistible hook for any Theroux fans.
The 90-minute film is directed by Jack Rampling, while production credits go to Emma Whitehead and executive producer Arron Fellows. As of yet, there is no firm release date for the series, but with all the footage in the can, there shouldn’t be long to wait.
