Lorde reveals issue with ‘Solar Power’: “I don’t think this is me”

Lorde has opened up about her mixed feelings towards her 2021 album, Solar Power, which she no longer feels fully represents her.

The New Zealander is on the cusp of releasing her long-awaited fourth album, Virgin, later this month. She has trailed it with lead single ‘What Was That’ and, most recently, ‘Man of the Year’, both of which mark a musical shift from the summer sounds of Solar Power.

In a new interview with Therapuss with Jake Shane, Lorde looked back on her career to date, saying of her world tour in 2017 following Melodrama, “It was also so crazy touring Melodrama. I found it very intense for that whole time to be in this endless hardcore music every night. I found it pretty intense and I just wanted something light and easy after that. It was cool.”

Lorde then explained how Solar Power was a reaction to its predecessor, noting, “I love Solar Power so much, and I truly needed to make it. I wouldn’t be here with another album if I hadn’t made Solar Power. But it showed me that you have no choice but to be who you’re supposed to be.”

However, on a less positive note, she reflected, “Me disappearing and being all wafty… I was like ‘actually, I don’t think this is me.’”

Similarly, in a previous interview with Rolling Stone, Lorde explained that around the release date of Solar Power, all that she remembers feeling from the period was “so hungry and so weak” due to suffering from an eating disorder.

Following the release of Virgin, Lorde will embark on another global arena tour later this year. The lengthy set of dates will begin with a North American leg on September 17th at the Moody Center in Texas. It will then traverse Europe and the UK before returning to mainland Europe to conclude in Stockholm on December 9th.
