Lorde announces new single ‘Mood Ring’ will drop this week

New Zealand singer Lorde has announced the arrival of her new single ‘Mood Ring’. It is the final track released before her much-anticipated album Solar Power drops at the end of this week.

On a post made via her website, the singer recently gave August 17th (that’s today, folks) as the single’s drop-date. It will be related in conjunction with a music video co-directed by Lorde herself and Joel Kefali. That video is set to premiere at 7pm BST tonight. Ahead of that premiere, Lorde will also be holding a virtual live stream at 6.45pm.

‘Mood Ring’ is the third single from Lorde’s upcoming album and follows the release of its title track, as well as ‘Stoned At The Nail Salon’, which came out last month.

Lorde has been supporting the release of the album with an array of live performances, including one in which she debuted the title track live on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. She also appeared on Late Night with Seth Meyers, during which she performed ‘Stoned In The Nail Salon’ and took part in the show’s ‘Day Drinking’ segment.

Following an appearance on the YouTube show Hot Ones, in which she was forced to answer interview questions whilst eating increasingly spicy hot wings, Lorde described her desire to be more secretive about the meaning behind her songs than she has been in the past: “As I get older, I find myself saying, ‘No actually I’m not gonna explain that song,” she said, adding: “Not because I necessarily need it left to interpretation, but because it’s about something that’s very precious to me.”

Lorde has also responded to the misogynistic comment that she is part of Jack Antanoff’s “stable” of female artists that he produces for. Lorde worked with the producer on both Solar Power and 2017’s Melodrama. Lorde said: “I haven’t made a Jack Antonoff record. I’ve made a Lorde record and he’s helped me make it and very much deferred to me on production and arrangement. Jack would agree with this. To give him that amount of credit is frankly insulting.”
