Lizzo’s lawyers attempt to dismiss lawsuit from “brazen liar” stylist
Lawyers for Lizzo have attempted to dismiss a lawsuit from the singer’s former stylist, branding her a “brazen liar” whose claims of alleged discrimination and wrongful termination they say are “meritless.”
Accusations of employee mistreatment emerged against Lizzo during her European tour in 2023, but lawyers have argued that her former stylist, Asha Daniels, has launched “absurd allegations” from being a “disgruntled former employee with an inflated ego.”
They also claim that Daniels held “personal vendettas” against Lizzo and members of her creative team, as she was upset that her job role did not grant her closer personal access to the singer to display her costume ideas.
Lawyers’ files obtained by Rolling Stone state: “Once [Daniels] joined the tour, it was immediately evident that she felt the role was beneath her,” before noting, “To add insult to injury, Daniels got no closer to Lizzo than occasionally smiling at her in passing.”
As such, Lizzo’s legal team is arguing that all further allegations of misconduct against her should be dropped before the case heads to a trial.
However, in response, Daniels’ lead lawyer, Ronald Zambrano, said: “We fully expected the defence to file a motion to dismiss. We also fully expect the judge to deny the motion, and we look forward to taking this case to trial and winning.”
He added: “The motion is meritless, and the defence knows it, but their modus operandi is to treat all lawsuits as having no grounds to proceed by repeatedly blaming the victim. It won’t work.”
The filing claims that Daniels has not provided any witnesses to corroborate her allegations, while she also alleges that she was discriminated against under the Americans with Disabilities Act 1990 when she was not provided support for an ankle injury, an allergic reaction, and two broken acrylic nails, with Lizzo’s lawyers responding that they “could not reasonably believe” these to be classed as disabilities.
Daniels first raised a case against Lizzo in September 2023, when she alleged that the singer made “racist and fat phobic” comments during her tour, while also accusing her of sexual harassment, and disability discrimination, all of which the singer denies.
