No Age returned to London in support of their latest album Snares Like a Haircut, The Californian duo chose the cult and intimate venue of Bethnal Green Workings Men’s Club to play their London headline show of hazy melodic punk. Positioned directly in front of the clubs iconic giant love heart, rhythm section-come-lead vocalist Dean Allen proudly announced “we flew this in from L.A” after smashing through ‘Cruise Control’ and ‘Stuck in the Changer’ from their latest release.
The set comprised largely from the new record with the occasional delve into their back catalogue with tracks such as ‘Teen Creeps’ and ‘Fever Dreaming’ being clear winners of the latter. Coy at first the audience, predominantly filled with thirty-somethings, embrace their inner-teens with the front of the crowd embroiling in a continuous mass of flailing limbs for the majority of the set.
Guitarist Dean Allen spent much of the show with his face curtained behind his curly locks providing a rapture of sound from a stack of pedals and amplifiers which may have required a small scaffolding rig to maintain its structure. While Allen juggled between drums, vocals and an array of electronic knick-knacks, both taking time to crack jokes and tell stories between songs.
Recently it has seemed to be a pattern that bands of all calbre feel the need to embrace in complex technicalities, choreography and elaborate visuals while playing live, which if done well can be impressive but often detracts from the whole idea of seeing a human performance. Often the complete opposite is all that is really needed, and No Age are the perfect example; two people who love what they and doing and have fun doing it.
No Age will return for a full U.K. and European tour throughout October. Check out the new album Snares Like a Haircut out now.
