A few days ago, Little Simz teased the release of her latest single ‘Woman’ on her Twitter page. As soon as Friday arrived, the holy day of the week as far as releasing new music is concerned, and we as a listening audience finally get to kick back and enjoy the new number.
“I love it when I see women doing their thing and looking flawless; I’m here for that!” Simz explained in a press release. “It’s empowering, it’s inspiring; I wanted to say thank you and I wanted to celebrate them.”
There’s no way around it: this track is just smooth as hell. From the Soulquarians-esque backing track to the easy flow of Simz’s verses to the sweetly melodic hook delivered by Cleo Sol, it all mixes together in a fantastically resplendent fashion while retaining an utterly chill vibe. Simz gives a shout out to Donna Summers, who rightly gets props for her innovations and influence over the ’80s music scene, but I get a much heavier Erykah Badu feel from these proceedings. Whatever it might compare to, the truth is that at the end of the day, it’s all Little Simz, and it’s all about bringing the party.
The accompanying video, directed by Little Simz herself, certainly accomplishes that celebratory feeling. The girl power is on full blast, but always in a way to exalt and just plain have a good time. The overall message is wickedly cool and powerful, so much so that if this Cis-white-early 20’s American man can feel wholly liberated by it. Now that’s an accomplishment.
The new track is the latest preview for Simz’s highly-anticipated upcoming fourth studio album Sometimes I Might Be Introvert.
Little Simz is very quickly becoming one of those artists who is racking up impressive job titles like they’re going out of style: to date, we have singer, rapper, producer, actor, writer, activist, and now music video director. She might sometimes be an introvert, but the outward artistic expressions that she’s been steadily supplying over the past few years are priming her to break out in a major way.
