Liam Payne, former One Direction member, dead at 31

Liam Payne, famous singer and solo artist known for his work in the boy band One Direction, has been found dead at the age of 31 in Buenos Aires.

The singer was found dead after a fall off the third story of a hotel. Though emergency services had arrived on the scene, they confirmed that Payne had passed away.

According to Reuters, authorities had been called to a hotel in Palermo in reference to “an aggressive man who could be under the effects of drugs and alcohol.” Payne was then found in an interior hotel patio when first responders arrived.

The statement of death was confirmed by doctor Alberto Crescendi, who told Argentinian TV (via The Times), “At 17.04 we were alerted through 911 about a person who was in the inner courtyard of the Casa Azul hotel. A few minutes later [an] emergency team arrived and confirmed the death of this man who we later learned was from a musical group.”

Crescendi also detailed that while there had been attempts to aid, there was no way to revive him following the fall, stating, “He had injuries incompatible with life as a result of his fall. There was no way to do anything.”

Payne began his career in 2008 when auditioning for the X Factor. After advancing with a cover of Frank Sinatra’s ‘Fly Me to the Moon,’ he was ultimately cut before returning in 2010, where he was selected by Simon Cowell to work alongside Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Louis Tomlinson, and Niall Horan to form One Direction.

Following their appearance on the show, the band scored some of the biggest hits of the 2010s, including ‘What Makes You Beautiful’ and ‘Night Changes’. After making five albums, the band eventually went their separate ways, with Payne moving onto a solo career, releasing his only album, LP1, in 2019, featuring singles such as ‘Strip That Down’ and ‘Live Forever’.

While Payne had not been doing any extensive touring, he had scheduled a tour of Latin America for September 2023 until he was forced to postpone due to health concerns in August 2023.

Payne had not released any new material outside of various non-album singles, including the song ‘Sunshine’ for the film Ron’s Gone Wrong in 2021. He had also been working on an upcoming second studio album and had released the promotional single, ‘Teardrops’ in March of 2024.
