Liam Neeson’s ‘Naked Gun’ reboot set for 2025 release

After many years of discussion regarding a potential reboot, The Naked Gun is set to return in 2025 starring Liam Neeson.

The Hangover star Ed Helms was originally announced to be leading the cast in 2013, but after that particular version didn’t come to fruition, the project sank back to the depths of development hell. However, Neeson’s name became attached in early 2021 and it’s now set for release next year.

The Lonely Island‘s Akiva Schaffer is set to direct with Seth MacFarlane producing. While comedy isn’t an arena that Neeson dabbles in on a frequent basis, he’s acutely aware of the pressures that come with following in the footsteps of a character such as Leslie Nielsen’s Frank Drebin.

When word of The Naked Gun reboot first filtered out, Neeson admitted that “it’ll either finish my career of bring it in another direction”. The film is set for release on July 18th, 2025, Paramount have confirmed in their release calendar.

There’s no word on plot details yet, meaning it’s unclear whether Neeson will be inheriting the role of Drebin directly from Nielsen. He could also portray a descendant of the character who first appeared in short-lived TV series Police Squad! in 1982 or even a brand new creation for the film.

Dan Gregor and Doug Mand were tasked to pen a new draft of the screenplay initially written by regular McFarlane collaborators Mark Hentemann and Alec Sulkin, with production due to start later this year.

It’s all systems go for The Naked Gun, then, which will also mark Neeson’s first time taking top billing in a major Hollywood studio comedy.
